이동하는 세계

단순한 공간을 넘어, 그곳에 스며든 시간의 축적으로 인간이 정체성을 형성하는 중요한 매개체가 되는 곳을 ‘장소’라 한다. 개인의 내면을 들여다보고 스스로 정의하는 과정에서, 인간 실존의 본질적 요소로 자리 잡기 때문이다. 인간은 끊임없이 변화하는 환경 속에서 자신의 위치를 재설정하고, 때로는 장소와 관계를 바탕으로 존재의 의미를 찾는다.

정서온 작가에게 ‘포항’은 고향 이상의 의미를 지닌다. 성장기의 시간과 기억은 작가가 예술적 감각과 세계관을 형성한 원천으로 작용했다. 성인이 되어 낯선 도시에서 거리감과 소외감, 이질감 같은 감정을 겪고 귀향한 ‘포항’은 단순한 물리적 공간이 아닌, 이상적 그리움의 장소로 작업 전반에 걸쳐 중요한 토대가 되었다. 작가는 고정성과 이동성을 동시에 품은 이곳의 삶을 통해 자신의 정체성과 위치를 인간과 장소, 관계의 불안정성에 이입하여 새로운 시각으로 바라보고 있다.

<이동하는 세계>는 정서온 작가의 개인적 경험을 바탕으로, 인간이 장소와 맺어진 관계를 재정의하고, 느끼는 감정을 시각화한다. 작품은 심리적·정서적 관계, 상실이 초래한 현실과의 단절에서 나타나는 이상향에 대한 갈망을 내포하고 있다. 이와 함께 우리는 과연 장소를 어떻게 정의하며, 그 안에서 어떻게 살아가야 하는가? 그리워하는 ‘이상향’은 실제로 존재하는가, 아니면 끝없이 찾아 헤매야만 하는 허상인가? 와 같은 중요한 질문을 던진다. 나아가 내재된 정신적 가치와 본질을 탐구하고 존재의 의미를 발견할 수 있을지 다각도로 조명한다.

전시는 명확한 답을 찾거나 제시하는 것이 아니다. 이상향이 그리움의 대상인지 실재할 수 있는지는 모호하게 남아 있으며, 관람자는 자신의 경험에 따라 이를 다르게 해석할 수 있다. 그저 우리가 찾는 이상과 정체성을 고정된 공간에서 찾을 수 있는지, 혹은 끊임없이 변화하는 여정 속에서 만나게 될 것인지에 대해 생각해 볼 수 있는 시간이 되길 바란다.

The World as Representation on the Move 2025

When accumulated time permeates a particular space and turns it into an important medium that contributes to the formation of an individual’s identity, it becomes more than a mere space; it starts to be called a “place” because it grows into an essential element of human existence involved in the processes of examining one’s inner self and defining oneself. Environments constantly change by nature, and humans must continually readjust their positions within these circumstances and, as a result, they sometimes find the meaning of their existences based on their relationships with places.

To Seoon Jung, the city of “Pohang” is much more than just a hometown. The time and memories from her childhood there have served as the point of origin through which Jung formed her artistic sensation and worldview. When she later returned to “Pohang” as an adult after experiencing distantness, isolation, and alienation in unfamiliar cities, the city became more than just a physical space and became the place of utopic longing, and has since served as an essential foundation throughout her art. Jung’s life in Pohang has both the properties of fixedness and mobility, and through this, she perceives her own identity and position in a new perspective that empathizes with the instability inherent in humans, places, and relationships.

The exhibition, World on the Move, aimed to redefine the relationship between people and places and visualize the emotions felt based on Jung’s personal experiences. Specifically, the works presented here contain the yearning for a utopia that emerges from the disconnect with reality — caused by psychological and emotional relationships and loss. Additionally, the works pose the following important questions: How should we define a place, and how should we live within it? Does utopia — the object of longing — exist in reality, or is it an illusion that one can only search for endlessly? Also, these works research inherent spiritual values and essence and make a multi-perspectival examination of whether the meaning of existence could be discovered.

World on the Move did not find or propose concrete answers. The question of whether utopia is an object of longing or a corporeal was kept ambiguous, and viewers were allowed to interpret it differently based on their own experiences. Through this exhibition, my humble hope was to provide the time to reflect upon whether we could find the ideals and identities we seek in a fixed space or whether we would encounter them in constantly changing journeys.
